the recap
STEAM Academy (McCluer South Berkeley) vs Hazelwood Central - Jan. 19th, 2026
Monday’s girls varsity matchup in the 2nd annual MLK Classic Showdown saw high energy, physical play, and a late rally by the Hawks against a steady lead from the Bulldogs, ultimately ending in the first win for STEAM (52) in their last five meetings with Hazelwood Central (47).
Coach Adrian Betts (STEAM) on what impacted his team’s performance: “We’ve been focusing on defense, making an extra effort… We got a senior-led group, they played hard, they played together, they communicated, when things started to go a little awry they stepped up and made shots and made free throws we needed.”
Coach William Holloway (HWC) on the team’s performance and future focus: “We lacked energy. [Looking forward] we’re gonna keep doing what we always do. We’re gonna get back in the gym, we’re gonna work, we’re gonna grind, we’re gonna put this behind us and just focus on what we got going on.”
